Nathan Anderson

Nathan is the Head Coach and owner of DFC. He started fencing at age 15 and has been involved in the sport ever since. He has served on USA Fencing’s Board of Directors (2013-2015).

Nathan has an A rating in epee and in foil and has held a C rating in Sabre.

Nathan has won over 30 national medals, 8 National Gold medals, 2x National Champion, NCAA All American and a member of 2 NCAA medal winning teams when he fenced for the University of Pennsylvania, captaining the team his senior year. Nathan won 2014 Pan American Championship and a 2023 World Team member.

Nathan coached and captained the U.S. Vet Epee World Championship Team to a Gold medal in 2017. Nathan has coached National Medalists in every age group in USA Fencing and National Champions in Foil, Epee, Sabre.

Henri Darricau

Henri started fencing at a young age and comes from a fencing family. Coached by his father, and training with his brother, Henri fenced foil in the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

Henri then went on to become a graduate of the INSEP in Paris, earning his Masters in Fencing.

Henri has held A ratings in all 3 weapons and still actively competes, having made 6 consecutive Veteran World Teams, and has been the top ranked fencer in his age category. He has competed in Junior World Championships, Senior World Championship, Olympic Games, and Veteran World Championships over the course of his fencing career.

Maciek CZYZOWICZ

Maciek started fencing in Poland at 17 in 1979. He competed in the Modern Pentathalon, with fencing being one of the events he excelled in. Maciek won 7 World Cup medals in Pentathalon between 1990 and 1996, as well as a Silver at the 1991 European Championships.

Maciek competed in the 1988, 1992, and 1996 Olympic games and won a gold medal in the Modern Pentathalon at the 1992 Olympics. He also was the Polish National Pentathalon champion in 1985 and 1997. He is also a 3-time US National Gold medalist in Epee and the 2017 Veteran National Champion. He currently holds an A rating in epee.

Maciek began coaching in 2003 in Denver, and in 2009 he founded the Rocky Mountain Fencing Academy, which has partnered with Denver Fencing Center to provide the highest level of epee instruction.

Conrad Garcia

Conrad began fencing in his home country of Guatemala at an early age. Beginning as a foil fencer, Conrad was on his national team, representing Guatemala at numerous international competitions.

When he retired as a competitor, Conrad decided to pursue a coaching education at the INSEP in Paris. After his time in Paris, Conrad moved back to Guatemala in order to coach their national foil team. After 2 years there, Conrad began coaching epee at various clubs in California before finally moving to Colorado.

At DFC, Conrad coaches foil and epee classes, as well as performs armory for club and personal gear, and referees competitions.

Chris Sauthoff

Chris has been fencing for five years but has accomplished a lot in that time! He holds a C rating in Epee and and E in Sabre and is a USA Fencing Spirit of Sport recipient and won multiple National medals.

Coach Chris was still using a cane when he first walked through the doors of Denver Fencing Center. Having suffered a stroke, Sauthoff worked diligently at fencing and the sport helped him with his recovery as he gained more and more muscle movement and functionality. Now, Sauthoff has paid it forward through coaching. He is the leader and main coach of the club’s program that works with adults with developmental disabilities, helping them prepare to fence in tournaments.

Coach Chris also teaches our Little Fencers class, and gives private lessons!

haley Ward

Haley is one of the very first students of DFC. She began fencing in 2004 when DFC first opened its doors. Haley has the honor of being the youngest certified coach that USA Fencing has ever produced, having attended Coaches College at age 13.

Haley was a 4-year starter in foil at Queen’s College, and has held a C rating in foil.

Haley is also a certified parafencing coach, and runs the country’s top parafencing program teaching and preparing students in all 3 weapons. Her students have won 4 National Championships in 2022 and 2023.

Alex KOVACS

Alex began fencing saber in 1981 and actively competed until 2008, ranking top 30 in the country in Division 1. Alex also is a 3 time National Champion in 1990, 1991, and 1992.

Alex also competed as a Veteran fencer, winning the USA Vet National Championships three times in 1999, 2000, and 2001. He also was a medalist at the World Masters Games in 1998. Alex also is a two-time World medalist, earning a bronze medal at the Veteran World Championships in Siofok, Hungary in 1999, and bronze at the 2007 World Veterans Championships in Sydney, Australia.

Alex has worked with fencers who have gone on to represent the University of Pennsylvania, New York University, UC San Diego, Stanford, Penn State, Notre Dame, John’s Hopkins, and Drew University. Alex’s students have medaled at National and World Competitions and competed at the NCAA Championships and Olympics.

Joe Greene

Joe started fencing at age 9 at Nellya Fencers in Atlanta, Georgia under Hall-of-Fame fencing coach Arkadi Burdan. As a fencer, Joe earned several Cadet and Junior national medals in saber, ranking highly in both Junior and Senior points.

After a short break from fencing, Joe moved to Denver and began coaching at DFC 3 years ago. Joe coaches our Competitive Sabre classes and gives lessons to students of all skill levels.

Joe’s students have earned several national medals and competed at many events in all divisions and ages. Coach Joe plans to re-enter competition when he ages into the Veteran category.

Jason MighelL

Coach Jason teaches Beginning Adult classes for all weapons, and private saber lessons, as well as coaching at National and International Competitions.

Jason is a competitive saber fencer himself and has competed medaled in National, and International fencing events. In 2019 he traveled to Cairo, Egypt, along with Head Coach Nathan Anderson and others, to coach and record a fellow saber fencer and student in her first appearance on the USA National World Veteran Team. He has also captured the Colorado Cup for Veteran Saber since 2013 and taken the Gold Medal at the 2017 Pan American Games as a member of Team USA in the men’s 50-59 Saber competition. However, he is most proud of the number of students that started in his adult beginning class who are still fencing recreationally and competitively. Jason also serves as the DFC photographer on occasion.

John Clayman

John started fencing at 10 years old under head coach Nathan Anderson. Taking time off from the sport, and returning to competition in college, John is DFC’s Gym Manager. John also coaches beginner classes, intermediate foil, and gives private lessons.

John holds ratings in all three weapons with a B in foil, and C rating in epee. He is also a national silver medalist in Men’s Foil.

John is also aspiring National Level referee, holding referee certifications in all 3 weapons.
